NEW YORK NEW LATIN MUSIC SHOWCASE~ PRE GLOBALFEST~APAP Incredible new Latin sound is emerging from the historical mecca that needs to be more widely appreciated, not merely as retro or imitative of Cuban, Puerto Rican or African, but as exactly for what it is; unique New York made modern fusion that synthesizes historical roots elements and distills it through a diasporic lense as new music from the Big Apple.The first NYNLM showcase at Subrosa intends to do this and begins by presenting 3 internationally celebrated NY based groups that bring grit to salsa, groove to son, sugar to clave, and ron to rock, they make audiences dance and think with some of the most audacious new Latin roots music on the scene today. Despite ever mounting challenges for original musicmakers, NY continues to be a creative fountainhead for new Latin music. On January 17, 2015, during the Arts Presenters Conference (APAP)at SUBROSA (63 Gansevoort) NYNLM 1 will showcase the unique Latin music of NY, in a Pre Globalfest daytime mini festival featuring;
ZEMOG El Gallo Bueno turns tradition on its ear with a 21st century hybrid Latin music that is heavy, artsy, whacky, and intensely fun and different. The collective gained a name for it’s raucous unpredictable sets at the now defunct Williamsburg bastion Zebulon and after gaining international acclaim and releasing an album on Mr Bongo Records UK, took a hiatus of a few years. Led by Puerto Rican/Peruvian composer, painter and multi-instrumentalist, and founder, Abraham Gomez-Delgado, Zemog returned this past December to self release a new double album. SPANGLISH FLY Mixing Latin soul and R&B with a contemporary perspective of a vintage groove, SPANGLISH FLY is “single-handedly reviving bugalú in NYC” The band has been popular in New York and along the East Coast for a few years and recently recorded an album with Boogaloo legend Harvey Averne. NEW YORK BOOGALOO, their second album, was released in the summer of 2015. OLA FRESCA Weaving musical bridges that connect traditional and modern Cuban dance music with, salsa, funk, and world beat rhythms, Ola Fresca, behind the creative energy of Jose Conde, through 10 years and 2 acclaimed, award winning albums have evolved a swinging, fearless tropical sound directly from Brooklyn. Their latest album, ELIXIR, has received unanimous international praise and was recently called “one of the best albums of the 2015” by World Music Central. |

El colectivo ganó un nombre por sus conjuntos impredecibles estridentes en el ahora difunto Williamsburg bastión Zebulon y después de obtener el reconocimiento internacional y la liberación de un álbum en Bongo Records UK, tomó un descanso de unos pocos años.
