Mecanica Popular / Website / Facebook

Psychedelic Salsa! Steeped in the salsa dura of the 1970’s, La Mecánica Popular goes the trippy way with heavy ambient and psychedelic touches without ever losing its clave. A mixture of Peruvian, Venezuelan and New York musicians, La Mecánica Popular is part of the new wave of tropical music.

La Mecanica Popular is a Brooklyn-based experimental afro-Latin Group led by Efrain Rozas. Their sound is steeped in the roots of 1970’s-era Salsa Dura, yet incorporates a heavy dose of modern gadgets – a unique blend of processed Peruvian-style guitar licks & experimental synths, sounds and textures. They have played at the Fania records 50th anniversary in Central Park Summerstage, featured in CNN, BBC and named one of the top 3 Latin acts in the U.S. by Juanes.

Efraín Rozas is a musician/researcher, specialized in the combination of new technologies and African-Diaspora genres. He is a Master and Music PhD candidate (ABD) at New York University under the McCracken fellowship. He has published the book “Fusión: A Soundtrack for Peru.” As a performer/composer he has performed at the Brooklyn museum, Queens museum, Central Park Summerstage Fania Records 50th anniversary in New York, and invited to the South by South West festival. He was a consultant for National Institute of culture of Peru and hosted/produced for 8 years the radio show “Músicas del Perú.” He has been featured at CNN, BBC, Washington post, Daily News and NPR Soundcheck.
