Nina Azucar

Nina Azucar is a DJ based in Brooklyn, NY who has displayed her talents for a diverse clientele across the city. Her creative aesthetic is all inclusive and celebrates the best from all musical genres, which stems from formal musical training and a rich cultural background that informs her style to this day. As a youth, Nina stayed abreast of trends in hip hop, house and alternative music by recording customized mix tapes, featuring choice song selections from her favorite radio shows, on her brothers boombox.

Born and raised in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, Nina was exposed to sounds from all over the Caribbean including dancehall, reggae and soca, which she frequently incorporates into her sets. She credits her parents, who rep Puerto Rico and Haiti respectively, for exposing her to musical genres that reflect her roots, such as bomba y plena, salsa, merengue, kompa andzouk. Her mothers all time favorite singer, who was featured prominently on the record player, was the late great Celia Cruz, whose catchphrase of “¡Azúcar!” was adopted and repurposed as the surname to Nina’s alter ego.

Fabi Jugo

What inspires me as a DJ is not confined to genre, or subgenre, but the various rhythms and influences that have come to define my life thus far. I thrive of the joy of discovery, especially as it relates to music and travel, which I believe are inextricably linked, and I love the thrill of taking risks in the booth. Through the peaks and valleys of any set I am always playing out a narrative, a journey from the valley all the way to the peak, where catharsis sets in and one can revel in the joy of movement, rhythm, and passion. The Latino roots inspire me in so many ways and I like to speak through the vein of my heritage.

Ryan Clover
